When Too Much Creativity Damages Productivity

I'm learning how letting go is a necessary path to nurture my best self.

"Stepping onto a brand-new path is difficult, but not more difficult than remaining in a situation, which is not nurturing to the whole woman.” ― Maya Angelou

As a creative person, I am often plagued with lots of ideas for new projects, specifically new ideas for writing blog posts. There’s a thrill that comes from contemplating a thought, doing some research and then sitting down to write. But what happens when your attention and loyalty are split among several creative projects?

I left writing for Medium.com because I felt like I was losing my writing voice and individuality which led me to focus on sharing my midlife journey through BecomingJae.com. Although I thought I was done with writing business content it seemed only fitting that I create a blog for my revamped brand strategy business so I created SHINE Lite to share marketing content.

Each of my blogs has its own story, brand, website, and social media accounts. What’s one of the most basic tenants of Marketing 101? Find a niche, focus on your niche, and master your niche.

The problem I have with writing for my two blogs and social platforms is that I’ve spread myself too thin leaving me unable to nurture my creativity and write at my best. Worse, I risk losing credibility with my BecomingJae.com and SHINE Lite readers when I fail to publish new content as promised.

With Great Change Comes Greater Responsibility

I’ve decided that I will continue to write about how growing older feels for me emotionally, mentally, and physically. I will also write about how the marketing landscape is shifting amidst new social media algorithms and the rise of brand storytelling. And sometimes I may write riffs and rants about seemingly unrelated stuff too. I’m at a place in my evolution where I realize that no matter what project or idea I launch to the world, it’s still coming from me, Jae Hermann.

Letting Go Can Be the Start of Something Great

I put a lot of energy into building the BecomingJae.com site, the BYY Weekly newsletter, and the SHINE Lite blog and it’s not easy for me to push them aside. Transitioning to a new blog is the best move for me to feel at peace and it enables me to share my best stories and blog posts all in one place.

I’ll expand more in the coming days but in the meantime, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me with questions or concerns. Leave a comment here or hit me up on Twitter, .@jaehermann.

Also, I’ll understand if any BYY Weekly or SHINE Lite subscribers want to part ways. Should you wish to unsubscribe you can do so here or send me an email at jaehermann@gmail.com and I’ll promptly remove you from future updates. However, if you’d prefer to stick around, which I sincerely hope you will, just sit back and expect a new update from me soon.

Navigating this midlife of mine is challenging but having an opportunity to share my experiences along the way helps the medicine go down a lot smoother, and I hope you find inspiration in my stories.

Thank you for sharing my journey with me.

Until next time,

~Jae
